Colin Aitchison
Director / Chief Pilot
My passion for aerial photography began in the skies above Queenstown in 2008 during my time as a freefall photographer tasked with capturing perfect imagery of what would be for many, a once in a lifetime experience as they tandem skydived from as high as 15,000ft. During my time as a skydive photographer & videographer I won several photography awards before eventually progressing on to be a tandem master and wingsuit pilot, most notably achieving five New Zealand skydiving / wingsuiting records in one jump.
Not too long after I became a freefall photographer, I discovered “drones” or UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) and I recognised the potential of these craft to be revolutionary for aerial photography, videography and beyond.
As a fortunate, early adopter of this technology I learnt first-hand, through building and modifying my own UAS, what goes into keeping these industry disrupting craft in the sky – giving me a sound technological understanding and a solid platform to build from as the industry rapidly developed.
In 2014 I founded Droneworks New Zealand from the desire to provide a variety of professional services to a rapidly developing market. I decided to transform what had been until now a hobby, into a full-time business.
In 2017 I struck a deal with GCH Aviation and came onboard as their Operations Manager & Chief Pilot, based in Marlborough. The company was rebranded to GCH UAV at this time.
In 2023 I purchased GCH UAV from GCH Aviation and Skyworks UAS was born.
It’s been an incredible journey and I have been fortunate enough to embark on some amazing adventures - no two days are the same. If you are looking for an experienced professional UAS / drone operator who is passionate about what he does and has the technical knowledge and ability to deliver outstanding results safely and efficiently, I would love to discuss your projects requirements.
